Petak's "Cafe", (Prepared Food, Catering and Cafe) Madison Avenue (bet. 89th and 90th St.)
Petak's is among the best shops in New York for Appetizing and Prepared foods. Their muffins, baked in the store, deserve top ratings. We enjoy their smoked salmon and sturgeon salad, as well as spinach rotolli and fish preparations. Recently, Petaks has added a Sushi Chef who is proving an outstanding addition to an excellent staff. Best of all are the coffee beans from Schapira's. We order a pound of decaffeinated Kenya and a pound of their Special Blend ground for Melitta, mix it half and half for our morning coffee - and know of none better.
If you're visiting the Guggenheim Museum, consider a stop at Petak's Cafe, where you can have a sandwich, salad or more elaborate dish - and a cup of their cappucino, again non pareil.

Lorenzo & Mario's 1418 Kitchen, 1418 Third Avenue (bet. 80th and 81st St)
Lorenzo & Mario's 1418 Kitchen stands out in the crowd of caterers and venders of Prepared Foods. Maria, a gifted, tempestuous Latin, is an extraordinary chef who runs
the tightest ship in town. Bring home her dishes, warm them in your oven
or microwave, put them on the table, and you and your guests could be eating
at one of Manhattan's top restaurants: Duckling with Orange Sauce, Stuffed
Cornish Hens, Ossobucco, Lasagnas and Cannelonis, Chicken Croquettes, exquisitely
prepared vegetables (Haricots Verts, spinach puree, Wild Rice - you name it,
Maria prepares it). And desserts- Wonderful fruit pies, Flans, Poached Pears
in wine. Or if there's something special you'd like (a Beef Wellington, for
example), plan it in advance and let her know. She has an extensive menu
for holiday seasons - or your special party. Going strong after many years-
and at the top.
